What is teen life coaching?

Teen life coaching is a one-on-one partnership where your teenager figures out who they are, what they want, and how to get there — with a youth life coach walking alongside them. It's not therapy. It's not tutoring. At Heart Harbor Coaching, I work with high school students and college students in Maine and online on the things that actually matter to them: confidence, direction, identity, relationships, school stress, and the transitions that don't come with instructions.

How is coaching different from therapy?

Therapy focuses on healing — it takes a client from struggling to functioning. Coaching focuses on growth and takes the client from functioning to thriving. A therapist works with mental health conditions, processes trauma, and provides clinical treatment. Coaching works with teens and young adults who are functional but stuck, overwhelmed, or trying to build something.

How long does coaching take to work?

Most clients start noticing real shifts within the first few sessions. The six-week Compass Block gives you a solid foundation. The twelve-week Voyage Block is for deeper work and longer-term momentum.

Is coaching appropriate if my teen already sees a therapist?

Yes — and it's honestly a great combination. Therapy supports mental health and healing. Coaching builds skills, motivation, and forward momentum. Coaching doesn't replace therapy — it runs alongside it.

What happens on the Discovery Call?

Fifteen minutes. No paperwork, no commitment, no awkward sales pitch. You talk, I listen. If you're a parent, tell me what you're seeing with your teen. If you're reaching out for yourself, tell me where you're stuck. I'll tell you honestly whether coaching seems like a good fit — and if it isn't, I'll say so and point you somewhere that might help more.

Are sessions confidential?

Yes. What happens in our sessions stays in our sessions. For teen clients, parents don't automatically have access to the details of what we talk about. I'll share general themes with parents when it's helpful and when your teen is comfortable with that. If I'm ever concerned about safety, I will always act on it.

What happens in a coaching session?

A calm, structured fifty-minute conversation where you — or your teen — is in the driver's seat. We might work on a specific goal, talk through something that's been getting in the way, or build a concrete plan for what comes next. You choose the focus. You leave with something real.

Coaching for emerging adults is a one-on-one partnership built around where you actually are: maybe you have a degree and no idea what to do with it, maybe you know what you want but can't seem to make it happen, maybe you just feel stuck in a way you can't quite name. I work with young adults on direction, confidence, career decisions, relationships, and the gap between where you are and where you thought you'd be by now.
